Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is a form of activated carbon with larger particle size compared to powdered carbon. It is produced from raw materials like coconut shell, coal, or wood through high-temperature activation. Its porous structure and large surface area make it highly effective for adsorption of organic and inorganic contaminants. GAC is typically used in fixed-bed filters, adsorption columns, and water/air purification systems.

Technical Parameters & Performance Guidelines

🔹

Iodine Value

The Iodine Value is the most common parameter to measure the performance of activated carbon. It indicates the adsorption capacity of carbon — specifically the amount of micropores available to trap contaminants.

Higher iodine value = higher adsorption capacity

Typical Range: 600 – 1200 mg/g

600 mg/g 900 mg/g 1200 mg/g

Mesh Size

Mesh size defines the particle size of GAC (how coarse or fine it is).

It affects flow rate, contact time, and filtration efficiency.

Standard GAC Mesh Sizes

4×8 mesh

(2.36–4.75 mm)

Large Particles

Low pressure drop, used in air/gas treatment applications

8×16 mesh

(1.18–2.36 mm)

Balanced Size

Ideal for water purification systems

12×40 mesh

(0.425–1.70 mm)

Fine Size

High adsorption efficiency, used in drinking water, pharmaceutical & food industry

20×50 mesh

(0.297–0.850 mm)

Very Fine

Used in special applications requiring maximum surface area
